When should you see an optometrist, and when an ophthalmologist?
Optometrists and ophthalmologists both focus on eye health and vision, but their areas of expertise are slightly different.
- Optometrists Optometrists specialise in visual acuity, prescribing glasses and contact lenses, and in general eye care. Their scope of practice is limited compared to that of ophthalmologists.
- Ophthalmologists are doctors, who specialise in eye diseases, the in-depth study of the structure and function of the eye, as well in the diagnosis and treatment of more serious eye conditions.
If you have difficulty seeing or require vision correction (for glasses or contact lenses), an optometrist is often the first choice. If you develop more a serious eye-related problems or require medical care, you should see an ophthalmologist. They are qualified to determine a more precise diagnosis and provide the necessary treatment. Regardless, it is a good idea to consult a doctor or specialist to get personal advice and guidance tailored to you.

The Medicum Lasnamäe Clinic also has an optician’s, where you can visit an optometrist and find a suitable pair of glasses. The optician’s has something for every taste – we offer a range of different brands and styles.
The store is located on the ground floor, in the corridor between the Punane 61 and Vilisuu 6 buildings, next to the café.
We are open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:00
Appointments
An optometrist checks your eyesight and, if necessary, issues a prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
Examinations
Dry eye testing
Dry eye testing is performed during the appointment with an optometrist. The aim of the examination is to assess the moisture levels of the eye’s surfaces and its overall health.
Visual acuity test (eye testing)
Eye tests are conducted by an optometrist during the appointment. Their role is to assess and correct people’s visual acuity and their perception of light, colour and shape, while providing advice on eye health. They also prescribe new glasses or contact lenses. If a condition indicating an eye disease is found during testing, the optometrist will recommend additional examinations by an ophthalmologist.
